Coral red, turquoise blue, white and grey are the prominent colours in Azurina (earlier called Azure) at Race Course. The store, with its white walls, is simple, neat and classy. Mannequins display clothes from the latest collection, ‘Exploring all things square’, which incorporates the square into garments. “We see squares as a design mostly on lungis. I wanted to explore the shape, and bring it to the public domain,” says Dipu Krishnamurthi, owner of the store.
A checked cotton top in coral red catches my attention. It has a boat neck and half sleeves. “It goes well with palazzos,” says Radhika Santhosh, the store manager. There are also kurtas and dresses made with the same fabric.
Santhosh shows me a layered sheer white checked dress. Through it, the black-and-white striped inner dress is visible. The layers are detachable and the top can be worn as a long jacket over a kurta or a pair of jeans. Most of their collections are in cotton and Khadi. A checked grey khadi kurta with centre cut, a V-neck and button embellishments in the middle “can be worn either with a printed or solid-coloured palazzo. The centre cut open up when one walks, revealing the pants,” Santhosh explains. A plain yellow khadi dress has two front pockets designed in the shape of grids. A V-neck top, with brown, chocolate, off-white and grey squares is called “Khadi Latte, as it reminds me of the different shades of coffee,” says Krishnamurthi. Coral red and turquoise blue checked palazzo pants also are part of the collection.
The collection is casual and simple. Krishnamurthi explains, “It is all about comfort and style. We have tried to bring a calm coastal holiday feel to it. Most of it is designed in such a way that even, when worn oversize, it looks good.”
Krishnamurthi adds that it took her around six months to come up with the latest collection.
