Archana Arun’s boutique, Julaha, stands out from the rest with the sparkle of silver. Her silver studio has an eclectic collection of jewellery in a wide range of designs.
“I used to sell clothing and silver jewellery online when it was still in its nascent stage. When I opened the boutique in 2016, I focused on fabric alone. What made me return to silver jewellery was enquiries from my former customers,” says the 30-year-old.
Julaha isn’t your conventional jewellery store where pieces are displayed in showcases. “It is maintained as an online store. But the stock is always available here,” says Archana, who left her job in Technopark to become an entrepreneur.
Temple jewellery is the main draw at Julaha. “In addition to real antique pieces, we have jewellery with antique designs.” A most-sought after item is the ‘Attigai’, the classic necklace with kemp stones and a floral pendant with pearls and kemp that comes in colours such as red, green, black and dark magenta. Reversible Attigai necklaces and pendants are another attraction.
Jewellery with the vintage Guttapusalu design is a speciality of her collection. Traditionally associated with Andhra Pradesh, the design has clusters of small pearls and therefore the name, as ‘gutta’ means ‘a shoal of small fish’ and ‘pusalu’ stands for ‘beads’.
Archana says that silver jewellery with a gold polish (yellow gold or antique gold) has many takers. The traditional kaashumala with oxidised finish, studs, earrings, pendants, jhumkas, nose-pins, toe-rings, bangles and anklets are for college-goers and fashionistas. “Many are handcrafted by artisans in Coimbatore and Jaipur,” she says. Prices start from ₹300. Onam sale begins today and will be on till August 27 .
Julaha is at Udarasiromani Road (USRA-62), Vazhuthacaud. Time: 10 am to 7 pm.
