New cultural centre in city

The Cultural Centre at Anakkulam is a tribute to the culture leaders of Kozhikode, Mayor A.K.Premajam says

The Kozhikode Corporation’s Cultural Centre at Anakkulam will be opened on May 31 by Jnanpith laureate writer M.T.Vasudevan Nair.

Mayor A.K.Premajam told reporters here on Friday that the Cultural Centre is a tribute to the cultural leaders of Kozhikode of the past as well as present and that it would be a platform for the cultural activities of the city henceforth. The cultural centre consists of rooms to accommodate artistes, facility for staging, an amphitheatre, libraries and facilities for propagation of art and culture.

The Mayor herself will preside over the inaugural function to be held at the Centre at 5 p.m. on Sunday. While M.T inaugurates the centre, former MLA M.P.Veerendrakumar will inaugurate the Amphitheatre. M.K.Raghavan, MP will inaugurate the play rehearsal centre while A.Pradeep Kumar, MLA will inaugurate the cultural training centre. The special Koothupura at the centre will be inaugurated by Purushan Kadalundi, MLA.

The inauguration will be preceded by various cultural programmes including Ghazal by Kozhikode Abdul Nasar. The inauguration will be followed by the performance of the play ‘Chiriyum Chinthayum’ by Lokadharmi theatres.

The Mayor said that the building cost around Rs.5 Crores. M.P.Veerendrakumar, had contributed Rs.60 Lakhs from his fund, while he was the MP six years ago. The Corporation’s own fund and plan fund has been used to complete the construction. Noted architectural firm Prashanth Associate had designed the centre.
