The Central University of Tamil Nadu, Tiruvarur, will offer four post-graduate courses, namely, M.A. (English); M.A. (Tamil); M.A. (Regional Studies) and Post Graduate Diploma course in Eco-conservation.

Addressing presspersons here on Friday, the Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Tamil Nadu, B.P. Sanjay, said that September 26 was the last day for the submission of applications. He said the courses would start depending on the response from the candidates. Each course should have at least 10 students to ensure its justification. Prof. Sanjay said the University, to start with, would have seven faculties to handle the classes.

The University has been temporarily housed in a government-owned building which accounted for a total of 146 rooms. Its own building would be constructed for which the State government had allotted 560 acres of land, including the lands got through acquisition.

Prof. Sanjay said the local residents’ co-operation was overwhelming for the acquisition of land. "Many villagers who had surrendered their property are rather happy over the acquisition process in the cause of a long-term higher education project," he said, adding that the University would ensure access to and affordability for quality education for the benefit of students hailing from non-metro areas.

He said the Central University would spare no efforts in tapping the potential of leading higher educational institutions. "We shall consult with the national level academic experts," he said. He added that he would discuss with the authorities at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore on Saturday to explore the possibility of availing the services of their faculty at Tiruvarur.

The Union Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will be a part of the function on 30 September.
