No band has a stronger conviction for music than Bengaluru band Imputed Then . Going by the anthem of ‘soft music, hard truth’, the upcoming gospel band comprises eclectic musicians who have grown on the city's soundscape. The four member band, comprising Stanly John on vocals and guitar, Thilak John on guitar, Daniel Thotumpuri on bass and Sam John on drums, plays a range of blues and funk in a sound that they can truly call their own. What sets them apart is their inherent faith in a higher calling that they exude with firm belief in their music.
The story behind the band
We have known each other and been good friends for many years. Each of us were busy with other bands and never thought we would come together. However, we would like to believe our faith and passion for music and God brought us together.
You guys play music because
We enjoy playing together and we believe it is part of our life’s calling. We strive to better ourselves every step of the way and we hope to stick together and make it big soon.
You’ll still remember time when
We used to jam together in church. Some of our most memorable moments are during our jam sessions. One of the first moments of truth we felt we can assert ourselves as a band was during our jam sessions.
The toughest part about being a young band
That’s simple. Getting gigs and organising jam sessions of course. But since the Bangalore scene is opening up, the time seems right for us.
The story behind the name
The word ‘Imputed’ means credited. The Bible says that the prophet Abraham was imputed as righteous not because of his good deeds but because of his faith. So we too believe that we are made righteous because we believe. And why ‘Then’? Because we look back to the cross where Jesus hung, it was ‘Then’ that righteousness was credited to those who believe.
Musicians that inspire you
We all share a wide range of influences, especially since we come from different musical backgrounds. But our common inspirations are Don Moen, Ritchie Blackmore, Jimi Hendrix, Mike Portnoy, Chris Alder, Gavin Arison and Lincoln Brewster.
Compositions over covers
We would pitch for compositions any day. Most of our songs have the feel of Blackmore but there are very few songs that suit our genre. So we prefer writing our own songs and playing our original sets.
