Films on films are in vogue now. Masala Padam , which hits screens today, is one such; it starts in a theatre and ends in a theatre.
Bobby Simha and Shiva, part of the lead cast, are among the audience. “We’ve explored how cinema and real life are connected,” says director Laxman Kumar, who was the cinematographer in films like Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu and Kullanari Koottam, “We have tried to explore what the masala genre is all about, in the backdrop of social media and film criticism on the Internet.”
He feels that cinema in cinema itself is emerging as a genre in Kollywood, thanks to a surfeit of films in such themes. “At one time, it was considered common in the industry that movies that dealt with filmmaking and the military would fail at the box office. Times have changed now.”
Laxman is clear with respect to the subjects he’d deal with as a filmmaker. “My style is multi-genre,” he states, “I’m currently working on a script that will incorporate both love and politics.”
