ORIGIN: They were a discerning group of young men some of whom were already earning well as photographers while many were just beginning to shape a career in photography. It also included a lot who were still yearning to be full-time professionals. What brought them together was a common factor - love and passion for photography. The year was 2005. It was also a time when digital technology was swaying over several age-old segments. Those working in the segment, in spite of their experience and expertise, were a confused lot while embracing the new technology. Perhaps, that gave them the spark of forming a common platform for better interaction and learning. The result was Insight Camera Club.
Today, stepping into its seventh year of formation, the enthusiasm of the members is quite evident as they talk of their past.
Though very young, the Club has already created a mark and is going ahead with ambitious programmes. Initially, the club membership was limited to a maximum of 50 photographers. But recently, the limit has been enhanced to 75. It has been made mandatory for all the members to meet every month despite their hectic schedule.
ACTIVITIES:The Insight Camera Club has been abuzz with varied photography-related activities. Ever since its inception, they have been organising wildlife camps, monsoon camps, nature study tours, one-day workshops by industry-experts on emerging trends in photography, lec-dems on updated versions of photography-related software solutions, equipment, newly introduced gadgets etc at frequent intervals. Learning has been an integral part of the core functioning of the Club. These apart, an annual family meet also forms an important agenda in the calendar of their events. Over the years, the Club has introduced a number of welfare schemes for its members. Some of the events put up by Insight Camera Club in recent times were pioneering projects of its kind. “The workshop on medium and large format digital photography and one on fashion photography by eminent fashion photographer C. Radhakrishnan has had a meaningful impact on our members and it helped us to hone up our skills”, remarks Girish Kurup, secretary of the Club. The Club also has been organising photography contests and its exhibition on a regular basis. “Initially we tried two state-level contests and taking a definite cue from its feedback, we have been putting up national photography contest for the last four years the result of which is inspiring”, says Valsan, a senior photographer and a member.
IMPACT:The formation and active functioning of the club has had its bearing on its members both qualitatively and quantitatively. The greatest advantage, according to the members, was the inculcation of a feeling of solidarity. It has also helped them immensely in embracing the fast changing technology which has a direct impact on photography.
