Assam tourism isn’t just about watching rhinos in the wild or swaying to the beat of the dhol as a bunch of Bihu dancers dance or about buying Assam silk and tea. In the latest road show held by Assam Tourism, the mission as it appeared was to clear perceptions and showcase that the state of lahe-lahe (slow) has more to offer than the above and a lot more for tourists who look for fun amidst nature.

This road show also happens to be the first of its kind where Assam Tourism is promoting itself all across the country.

Classifying the segments of tourism which Assam has to offer, Ashutosh Agnihotri, Commissioner and secretary Tourism Department, Assam says, “we have more than just Kaziranga. Assam as a state has religion, tea, golf, adventure, wildlife, ethnic tourisms. Depending on the interest of tourist the packages can be modified. Those we cannot make it to Kaziranga can see Pabitora and places in and around Guwahati. In wildlife tourism, there is Manas, Kaziranga, Nameri, Orang and Saikhowa.”

Ashutosh makes it clear that tourism suffers because of wrong perceptions. He says, the road show is also aimed at clearing perceptions and talking about customisation. “Food is a major set back according to feedbacks, so we have had extensive meetings with hoteliers and restaurants to offer variety keeping in mind religion, health and eating preferences.”

The tourism is targeted at the domestic market.
