Christmas might still be a couple of months away, but festive cheer was in the air at the Aachi Sing the Season semi-finals that were held at JP Hotel last Saturday. The seventh edition of the carol contest saw nearly 30 groups perform at the semi-finals, with old and new carols in both English and Tamil ruling the roost, along with some original compositions.

The contest saw choirs from schools, colleges, churches and corporates vying for a place in the finals that will be held on December 13. While the mood was upbeat, the audience appreciated the original compositions presented on the occasion. One such number incorporated ‘Aachi sing the season’ into the lyrics, much to the amusement of the audience and judges.

The first contestant on Saturday morning was the corporate choir from Infosys, followed by the 30-strong outstation school choir from St. Peter’s, Kodaikanal. Since one of the categories was also for the best costume-themed choir, contestants turned up in creative outfits. One such was a group that sported tees with slogans like “I am the bomb”, while others saw girls dressed in flowing gowns, wings and crowns. Carols like ‘A king is born’, ‘Call Him Jesus’ and ‘Bethlehem Ooril’ were examples of harmony and balance.

The gaana style of songs in Tamil found a place as well and struck a chord with the young audience.

One of the best performances came from the children’s choirs, with the primary section of MCC School stealing hearts with their cheerful medley beginning with ‘A holy, jolly Christmas’.

The seventh edition of Aachi Sing the Season was presented in association with The Fair Lady Designer and The Hindu and Vijay TV as media partners.
