ORIGIN: The Prathyasha Foundation, a Kochi-based public charitable trust began functioning in Kochi in the year 2005 and the very idea of forming it germinated from the fact that disabled people are a neglected lot in the society and that there are none to address their concern.

“The denial and humiliation that the differently abled people have to suffer in our society and from their own family cripple them mentally much more than their own physical shortcomings. And it’s our humble endeavour to empower them to overcome such man-made hurdles,” remarks Simon George, chairman of the foundation who himself leads a life from his wheelchair, but definitely on his own terms.

It was Simon George’s passion for life and compassion for the less-privileged that prompted him to form Prathyasha Foundation. The organisation is governed by a board of five trustees. Driven by the success of many of its past initiatives, Prathyasha Foundation is now spearheading another mission called ‘Disability Accessibility’ that will ensure easy access to public places for the differently abled, across India.

ACTIVITIES:Right from inception the foundation has been abuzz with activities. And of all their programmes, the one called ‘Pre-marital Meet’ has been hugely successful. Inspired by its astounding response, the foundation has organised similar meets in major towns in Kerala and is also planning to conduct the same in other parts of the country. In recognition of its service and contribution, Prathyasha Foundation has been awarded with a number of accolades in the recent past. An employment training centre for the disabled is also operational at Kaloor in Kochi. With a view to provide equal opportunities to the educated differently abled, the foundation also organises job fairs. It could successfully put up two community marriage ceremonies involving those who have come under its aegis. Campaigns, conventions and seminars are also part of foundation’s regular activities. These apart, the foundation also provides guidance, counselling and extend support to disabled people to look at life with a positive attitude.

IMPACT:The Prathyasha Foundation, through its numerous activities and intervention programmes, could ignite hope and bring smiles in the lives of many. It has instilled confidence in several differently abled people and made them believe that being so is just a physical condition which can be outstripped through conviction and commitment.
