Small screen award functions have come of age. Last weekend's Star Parivar Awards 2012 (SPA) had drama, emotion and lots of laughter. Organised in a manner that would have given their big screen counterparts a run for their money, the event brought under one roof the entire Star parivaar , yes literally. What one got to see was not the actors, but the characters from the serials complete with their costumes and mannerisms behaving like one big happy family. They all sat together, laughed and joked together, cheered their sadasyas (members) when they won an award followed by hugs amidst jumping and dancing.

Mostly, they all lived their characters at the event except perhaps Sandhya (of Diya aur bati hum fame) who giggled and laughed uncontrollably on stage when she went up to receive the Naya Sadasya female award. She even did a jig singing dhinka chika. It was quite amusing to watch Sandhya let go that way because she hardly smiles in the serial. But what takes the cake was Kushi Kumari Gupta (of Iss Pyar ko kya naam doon ) doing a Akshay Kumar in Om Shanti Om , when she missed the Naya Sadasya Award. Audience rolled with laughter watching her antics. There was no guessing and it was no surprise when Kushi and Arnav ( Iss pyar ko kya naam doon ) won the Best International and National Jodi Award.

The Shining Star Award for Nayi Soch Pal Award was given to Gopi (as she decides to study after marriage and her family supports her in the serial Saathiya ).

What was pleasing though was the two most popular mothers-in-law characters — Kokila ( Saathiya ) and Bhabo ( Diya aur bati hum ) taking centre stage and presenting most of the sequences. The two women proved they were just as gutsy and fiery in real life too. Since all the awards were given for the characters based on respective scripts, one wonders when the actors behind the characters will get their due?
