Cat myths busted

Cats are mysterious, affectionate beings that are sometimes misunderstood. Three people who adopted kittens and cats bust some common myths about them.

Charu Shah sets the record straight for those who wonder if cats are less loving than dogs. “A cat won't wag its tail when it sees you,” says Charu, who has rescued several cats that run up to her to show their gratitude at every chance. “They have other ways of showing affection. Cats sit on your lap and ask to be petted. One of my cats Aslan, rubs his face against mine. It's his way of saying he trusts me. Sometimes, they show affection by going around your feet, making the figure ‘8', or approaching you with a straight tail — this is your biggest reward!”

Another misconception is with regard to their independence. Several cat-owners leave their pets behind while relocating or travelling, assuming that they can fend for themselves. Cats whose humans leave them behind often die soon after, as most have lost the habit of hunting or scavenging (even feral cats barely survive this way these days, as they are too vulnerable). They miss their families and usually starve or, at best, survive until an illness, dog or traffic accident claims their fragile life”.

As for unfavourable superstitions about cats (black ones in particular), Anand Krishnan Srinivasan laughs them off. “It's really sad if these affectionate creatures are linked to bad omens because of their colour. My two black cats cross me every time I leave home. If this superstition were true, I would have been sick, penniless or dead by now”!
