Singer Benny Dayal might sound solemn and sober on the phone, but, on stage, he’s a livewire. He jumps, prances around and dances. And yes, he sings like a dream.

He’ll do all that at a free concert in the city this Saturday evening, where he will perform a number of his Tamil and Hindi hits. “It should be a lot of fun,” says the singer, speaking from Colombo, where he’s gone for a gig, “I’m looking forward to presenting my hit songs.” That list includes ‘Adiyae Kolluthey’, ‘Pappu Can’t Dance Saala’ and ‘Badtameez’, among many others.

The singer, who was part of music composer A.R. Rahman’s ‘Nenje Ezhu’ concert in the city, says the experience of being part of a star-studded musical ensemble will help him perform better on a live platform. “That was a magical experience, and it was an honour to be working with such experienced musicians,” he adds.

Is he as comfortable inside a studio as he is when he’s on stage and living it up? “At the end of the day, it’s about the music,” he says. “When I go for any recording, I make sure to give more than my 100 per cent and be honest to the song.”

Up next for the singer is a music video titled ‘Round Round’ that’s releasing today. “I’ve collaborated with rapper Brodha V for this track,” he says.

Catch Benny Dayal this Saturday at The Forum Vijaya Mall, from 6 p.m. For details, call 4904 9000.
