Silver lining found

Bright side: Find that silver lining. Photo: K. Murali Kumar

My mother is a working woman. After work, she would eagerly wait for me to return home from college in the evening. Once I get home, she would leave for the temple or go walking. I would ask her to sit and talk with me, but she would say that she had to get back before my dad came home and leave. Later, she would come home and get busy in the kitchen or watch television. This became our routine.

One morning, she woke up with a sudden back pain. Brushing it off as something caused by bad posture or sitting in front of the computer for too long, my mother did not miss her work or evening walks and temple visits. But there was no relief from the pain and she decided to consult a doctor. An MRI scan showed a slipped disc and she had to be admitted in the hospital for 12 days. My father stayed with her and I was at my grandma’s house. Though I enjoy being in my grandma’s house, I went through a tough time.

When my mother was discharged from the hospital, she was asked to take compulsory bed rest for at least two months. She is recovering and has taken some time off from work, temples and evening walks. I spend quite a lot of time with her now. I have understood that you must find a good thing whatever happens.
