We all dream but making your dream come true is what counts. Roshini Bahirwani has made it happen with her store Aarby’s. Studying a course in fashion changed this 24-year-old Hyderabadi’s destiny.
With her belief that fashion should be simple, her journey began with her participating in various fashion shows where she won many accolades. “Since then I’ve participated in various exhibitions and now I’ve got a chance to put up my collection in Chennai too.”
She tells NXg about her dreams, stint with Malaika Arora Khan and making it big.
Is fashion a passion or a shot in the dark?
Fashion has always been a passion for me. Fashion allows me to dip into another world and escape the one I’m living in now. It also is a way that I can voice my personality without having to say a thing.
You have studied fashion. And you are into the business for four years. What has helped — degree or experience?
Fashion has spread in all spheres of life. If you ask me it’s not just a degree but experience also plays a vital role. A degree is the platform to get into this world and experience is to get aware, learn day to day and reach the heights. I’d say, both are equally important.
In a short time you have made it big. Tell us about your journey.
My journey started from NIFT where I took up a course which matched my level of interest. After doing a few rounds of internships, came the orders from my pals.
The business took off slowly and was known for its simplistic, elegant designs that reflected the inner beauty, complete with comfort quotient. I remember my mom wanting to do this but household commitments kept her away and today we are both living our dreams.
What were the advantages and disadvantages of being young in your field?
Every field and every aspect of life is filled with challenges. I think my age goes both ways. I think it helps because I’m not jaded by the fashion industry yet. But I think it can be bad because people don’t take me seriously sometimes.
How was it dressing up a celebrity like Malaika Arora Khan?
That happened during my internship. It was a great experience to work with a model like her. Truly speaking, she knows how to carry off any attire with grace and poise. There was no question of convincing!
Who is the one celebrity you have always wanted to dress up?
I have also had the pleasure of dressing up another model Sharon Aamir from Hyderabad.
However, the one person I would love to dress up is Kareena Kapoor. I know and believe that she is one celebrity who will be able to carry off even a simple design with the same glamour that she does with other clothes.
How do you keep yourself updated about the changing trends worldwide?
To me, fashion means self-expression. Fashion changes every fortnight. I keep track by watching the various fashion shows conducted worldwide especially in London, Paris and New York. One of my secrets is to keep track on FTV. It works.
Who is your source of inspiration and what have you learnt from him/her?
My sources of inspiration are my mom and Manish Malhotra. I’ve always learnt not only the trend but also the personality needed to go with it. It is not about just following the trend but to believe in comfort. When it comes to Manish Malhotra I’d love to meet and learn a lot from him. He is my idol when it comes to fashion.
Roshini will be showcasing her collections at The Vimonisha Private Collection exhibition on August 8 at Hyatt Regency-Chennai, Anna Salai, between 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.
