Purasawalkam… The first thing that comes to your mind would be shopping and well, yes, the crowd. Apart from Madhar Sha, Aysha, Deensha, Sree Krishna Collections, Textile India, Ranjanas, Rathan Stores, Abirami Mega Mall and Naihaa — there is more! I'm going to take you down Purasawalkam High Road (PHR), not entirely though, but just those few shops that certainly need a visit.

Apart from those mentioned in the article, as you take a walk down PHR, you'll find that there's no end to the shopping experience that this shoppers' paradise has to offer.


Not to worry! You can indulge yourself in some lip-smacking delicacies right from full-meals to yummy biriyanis. Besides restaurants like Raaj Bhavan, Hotel Balaji Bhavan (Tana St.), Doveton Café, Hot Chips, Hotel Deccan and Hotel Paradise, there are also options by the roadside for the adventurous ones — samosas, chaat, spiced puffed rice and sundal.

You could try Burger Man, Milan Foods and Chat, Adyar Ananda Bhavan, Sri Krishna Sweets. No matter what do not miss out on the Arun Unlimited Parlour (Perambur Barracks Rd.), Amul Ice cream, and Creamee and Spicee (Ritherdon Road)

Footwear mania

No matter how well you dress, your outfit is incomplete without that good looking pair on your feet. The New Corner Shop, as the name goes, is situated at the start of Perambur Barracks Road, and PHR. You can find offers throughout the year, only here! (They have their sister outlet - Boots - in Anna Nagar) imported flip-flops from Bangkok (Rs. 150) and Velvet Ballerina Shoes from Bombay (Rs.150) this shop can give you a footwear craze.

Beauty quotient

Another new arrival in Purasawalkam is the Natural's outlet on Ritherdon Road. The latest at Natural's is their Fish Pedicure and temporary or permanent tattoos.

You've got only 100 bucks on you, and you need every possible thing that goes well with your apparel, and Voila! Welcome to Kathir's Shopping World. With imported goods from China, this shop has the latest and never misses out on trends. At this store, the prices for bangles start from Rs. 10 for the plastic and fancy bangles. The stone-studded ones are priced at around Rs. 500. Hair accessories start from Rs. 5.

Do not forget to head to the Market Street — one of the best places for those pretty accessories.

If you're fond of those colourful belts, sassy-looking bags and wallets, sparkly watches but do not wish to splurge, then Saravana Stores, Stop and Stare, and New Corner Shop, besides Kathir's is where you should be heading to.

You can pocket a colourful wallet for a mere Rs. 40, bags for Rs. 75.

How could shopping be complete when you don't pick some clothes? Stop and Stare at Waikiki complex (Basement) has what every college girl would want. From t-shirts to Mac makeup, to stoles and shrugs. If you're looking for a place for those appealing socks, this could be the spot.

Next, the shops that start with the letter ‘B' – Boston, Blazer and B3. The first two are well known, but B3 is their latest edition. You can add to your party wear collection here. Shops like Kay – the Fashion Bay, on Gangadeeswarar Koil Street, Shiddhi on Brick Kiln Road and B3 as well have those beautiful salwaars that you would love to wear. If you're the kind that opts to buy materials instead of readymade, fear not, the area is full of them. From cottons to crape, they're all there.

Not to leave out the guys. One of the latest showrooms is Chennai – 600012 on AP Road. This shop sets itself apart from others with its sports-themed interiors, especially cricket. They also have coolers, watches and belts, and this could be the place where the not-so-in-love-with-shopping-men can start and finish their shopping in one go.
