Dear Diary,

I survived today! I know it’s nothing to be happy about, but I did survive without being harassed, abused or tortured. It’s big for a woman these days to go by a day without being haunted by thoughts of violence. Not having acid thrown at my face and not being brutally assaulted for no fault of mine are my achievements for the day.

A news reporter once asked American screenwriter, producer and director Joss Whedon, “Why do you write strong female characters?”, to which he replied, “Because you’re still asking me that question!”

Women are considered inferior to men, even now in the era of modern democracy. Laws are enacted, provisions are made to empower women but nothing seems to affect this notion. It saddens me to have people tell me that my only major mistake in life is being born a girl! A stereotyped notion that I KNOW will change in the near future!

Now, I wish to wake up to a better tomorrow, where I’ll be allowed to live my life without having to be judged by my gender, where I’ll have the control over the way I live. I ask not to be treated like a goddess, but to be treated like a human being!

I survived today. And I know I will survive every day. The courage and confidence to live, comes with being born a woman! All I hope for, is a brighter tomorrow for the women in this country.
