We all have great memories. The Summer of 2008 is one of mine. It was right after my Std.XII board exams. got over and I had nothing to do in the holidays. I always had big dreams but never got to act on any of them. We had a solid four month holiday and I wasted the first two doing absolutely nothing.
An opportunity
During the third month my neighbour took me to a school where girls who were visually impaired came to study every week. We were supposed to dictate notes to them and they would write in the Braille format. Or some would just ask us to read and they would listen and learn. These girls, though eyesight impaired, were extremely determined; they went to college with others and worked harder to make a mark in the world.
Helping them, even if it was in a very trivial way, still felt so big and made me happy. When we are asked about our dreams we always say, “I want to become a scientist or a doctor or an engineer. We always think of things which will make us earn more money or to become famous. How many of us think about helping the world?
Even if we think about being socially active, we are so busy or lazy with our everyday lives that we never act. More than all my big dreams of doing great things, the happiness that helpful gave me was so immense that I feel schools and colleges should incorporate volunteering as a compulsory credit every year.
Helping others achieve their dreams gives a pleasure that I feel is much greater than what we get in realising our own dreams.
