When it comes to food I am very old school and love to have traditional dishes though my profession doesn’t allow me much to do that and I end up eating many new preparations every day. A recent invite to review the iconic Embassy restaurant in Connaught Place brought a smile to my face. It’s a restaurant which was old even before I was born. It was started by two friends P.N. Malhotra and G.K. Ghai who left a thriving restaurant business in Karachi and started everything from scratch in Delhi. Their passion to feed people and respect for their cuisine made Embassy into an icon which is now run by the third generation.
Taking the legacy forward Savar Malhotra is facing the challenging time with great courage and is on an expansion mode. I used the word challenging as it’s tough to better what is already among the best in business. I liked how Savar has just tweaked the presentation part of the food and kept the essence intact.
I started with a tomato soup and moved on to the platter of appetizers. Murgh malai tikka, bharwa tangri, mutton seekh kebab and ajwaini fish tikka were all good to satisfy me. I would like to especially mention seekh kebab as it was one of the better ones you can find in Delhi. Bit thick but it had a wonderful blend of spices which made the kebab flavourful and full on succulence. Their vegetarian platter was also worth trying except the corn seekh which was very dry.
While enjoying starters my major concern was to keep space for their tomato fish and dal meat, two dishes which make my visit complete at Embassy. Good thing about the fish is that it goes with any kind of palate and is accepted by both the expats and local walk ins. Kudos to the chef who is able to make the sauce so consistently.
The combination of sweet and tangy flavour with the crunchy fish topped with French fries is to die for. Another main course dish which I find unique is their chicken tikka with green peas. It’s a lovely combination which can be eaten at any time of the day. Their brain curry and rara needs improvement for sure as the curries had very suppressed flavours.
Though there are many favourites but if somebody will ask me to pick one I will choose Crème a la Embassy. It is undoubtedly the best pudding I have ever tasted.
