It rains. It shines. It’s pleasant and the next moment it’s warm. The weather right now is confusing – it’s summer and monsoon at the same time. But you don’t have to be confused with your wardrobe. As a wave of new collections and styles sweep in, three fashion bloggers discuss what looks work the best this season.

Noopur Kalra, Simply Moda

According to Noopur Kalra, brunches are the best way to start lazy summer days. “I wouldn’t describe myself as a morning person, so brunch is the perfect in-between meal to dress up for,” she says. “I love how it’s a look where you can keep things causal and simple but still create something amazing out of.” Jeans which are a staple for people trying to keep it comfortable, are something she suggests waving goodbye to. “Denim is very last season, and in a city like Chennai, where you can’t escape the sun, you don’t want to be wearing it out around the afternoon. For a light brunch, it’s best to wear something that’s going to let you breathe, like chinos, culottes and midi-skirts, all styles that go well with crop tops and muscle shirts.” Noopur further adds, “I love accessorising outfits with bold necklaces and quirky rings. I keep my outfits simple but my accessories are over-the-top, like my gladiators, my favourite footwear for the summer.” Keeping the blazing temperatures of the day in mind is important when it comes to make-up. “Don’t slather on too much because the heat is bound to ruin it. I usually go with a basic CC cream, eyeliner and lipstick. Overdoing anything, whether it’s your clothes or your make-up, is guaranteed to ruin your look.” It’s an exciting season for daytime wear, she says, “My favourites are all in fashion right now – floral, gingham prints and tassels and fringes. I’m in love with them all.”

Summer getaways just have the extra edge to them, believes Mehndi Jashnani. “Midsummer is the season of getaways,” she explains, “And whether you’re from the city and can’t wait to hit the beach, or you hail from the suburbs and are headed to the bright lights, you’re going to need to pack accordingly.” Before you pile clothes into your suitcase, she believes that it’s important to ask yourself three things – if they’re comfortable, travel well and are easy to style. “If you’re opting for a city break, remember to include tank tops, beaded or sequined shirts for nights out, and a few casual shirts. They go well with pastel-coloured (preferably buttercup yellow or green) ankle jeans that are quite fashionable. Other looks that work well are a pair of crisp shorts, a classic, flat-front version that can be dressed up or down, or skater or pleated tea-length skirts that give an effortless, flirty look.” Dips in the hotel pool are inevitable so, “choose a swimsuit that’s reversible for a two-in-one option”. For long, lazy days by the beach, go for a dress that’s either white or has floral prints, a printed crop top or an off-shoulder frilly one, or a tube top in a bright hue. Kaftans are also essential, because they can be used as a beach cover-up or simply as a dress with the addition of a belt.” For accessories, “dangling earrings in gold and silver are perfect for bare shoulders. “For a relaxed vibe, put on beaded leather wrist wraps. A pair of cheerful sunglasses will shield your eyes from the sun and add glam to your attire. Also in fashion this summer is a floral tiara.”

Richita Nichani, RichEstilo

For Richita Nichani, the best way to end a day is dancing with your friends within the air-conditioned confines of a club. “It’s the perfect way to escape the evening’s humidity,” she says. “Keep it simple, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be elegant.” The perfect clubbing look, she believes, can be put together with, “lots of shimmer”. “Whether you’re wearing high-waisted shorts, a long or short skirt, or a crop top, glitter is guaranteed to make you stand out.” There’s a strangely superhero-esque feel going on this summer, with Richita pointing out that capes are big in fashion. “They’re all the buzz right now,” she believes. “Printed capes are a bold choice to make. Team that with a plain top or tank with shorts or jeans. Make sure it suits your body type. It’s a look that’s a definite eye-catcher.” For make-up, she likes keeping it simple. “When it comes to make-up, it’s best to be subtle. I like to highlight my eyes and lips the most, with a bold kajal and mascara, finishing off with a red lipstick. A tip for keeping the base right is to use a BB cream instead of foundations because they are lighter and give you an even look that’s going to last you a long night filled with dancing, friends and fun.”
