Re-engineering beauty

Today's young mothers want to have their kids and keep their figures too. Among women who want to get rid of all unwanted post-pregnancy changes, cosmetic surgery is getting increasingly popular. Plastic surgeon Dr. Ajaya Kashyap, MD, FACS, says getting rid of the “frumpish look” and reverting to the pre-pregnancy shape is a high priority among today's women.

Interestingly, however, he reveals that college girls and not married women are the biggest customers to opt for surgical remedies to acquire a trendy figure. The treatment includes tummy tuck with liposuction, body contouring (arm lift, thigh lift and butt lift), breast surgery, abdominoplasty, laser stretch mark removal and various other skin treatments.

Those afraid of invasive post-pregnancy cosmetic surgery can opt for lipodissolve or mesotherapy for the removal of flabby fats from the desired area. Says Kashyap, “The time required to recuperate after a treatment may vary from a week to months depending upon the kind of surgery the patient undergoes.”

Pregnancy results in skin expansion which, it is believed, can only be reduced through cosmetic surgery. Balanced diet and regular exercise can only tone up the muscles but cannot cure the stretch marks. “It is a safe procedure and leaves no space for risks if done with trained and experienced hands,” avers Kashyap.

The expenses involved in a complete makeover range from Rs.2000 to several lakhs, depending primarily on the type of plastic surgery selected. “Liposuction and rhinoplasty are the most sought after treatment that women go for, the easiest way of reducing pockets of fat,” explains the doctor, who is certified both by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of General Surgery.
