Listening to a track of ‘Eminem’, I had this urge to shake my leg. But admittedly, I was lousy and that drove me to the ‘Blaze Dance School’ for a hip-hop dance session under the tutelage of Balaji.
I do have a fair knowledge about the origins of ‘Hip-Hop’ that is danced to hip-hop music. The dance evolved in the swinging 70’s promoted by the Afro and Latino Americans.
Hip-hop is a fusion of 'breaking,' 'locking' and 'popping.' It stands out from other dance forms as it is often improvisational in nature or referred to as ‘free style' and another vital style called ‘Battle’. Like all dance forms, this dance as well helps to lose weight. So, fitness is ensured and the element of fun is an integral part of this dance.
Waiting for Balaji to be done with his ongoing batch of students, I imagined myself doing a somersault and waving my hands up and down and to and fro alongside my session of ‘Hip-Hop.’
My heavy duty imagination was suddenly interrupted when Balaji hollered to greet me and beckoned to signal that I had to get ready and the join the class. Popular tracks of Lil Wayne, Jay Z, Eminem and 50 Cent reverberated through the entire studio and there I was, gyrating and well into the groove.
I was yet again told that I had to master around 139 warm-ups and 65 stretches for a period of around 6 months apart from ‘Diving’ and ‘Freeze’ as extra warm ups as a composition of the warm-up module in the hip-hop session.
I must confess that I practiced my warm-up for around 45 minutes and wasn’t as much crestfallen as I have been on some previous occasions for the metro workout. I am hopeful that one day I would wow my folks by showing off my ‘diving’ skills. So, anyone who believes that a great way to de-stress is by dancing, oh no by ‘hopping’ that ensures a party feel, then ‘Hip-Hop’ wins hands down!
