Make-up brushes are probably the most under-hyped product in the Indian market, which makes us wonder if we should buy these wonderful things.

So, do you need make-up brushes? Yes. If so, what are the ones you most certainly need? Fret not; this is a list of basic brushes every make-up-loving being should own.

The buffing brush This is usually a densely packed brush with a flat or slightly rounded top. This is best used for cream/liquid products such as foundations, cream blush, concealer... Use it in circular motions around your face and watch as it gives you an almost airbrushed finish, leaving your foundation/concealer barely visible to the naked eye.

The flat shader brush Typically an eye shadow brush, these are also dense and quite stiff, making it perfect to pick up pigmented powder products like eye shadows. The same brush can also be used to pick up cream products like concealer to place under your eyes, which can be blended in with the buffing brush.

The setting brush This is a smaller, slightly flat, fluffy brush that places powder in areas that you need the most. It needs to be small enough to fit around the contours of your nose, under your eyes and chin. Post foundation and concealer, this should help you powder the areas that get most oily, setting your foundation in place, thereby allowing it to last all day long.

The large powder/blush brush Everyone needs a little colour in their lives. And this brush helps you achieve that goal. A fluffy and flexible powder brush allows you to pick up smaller amounts of product and apply it in a diffused manner on parts of your face, taking away the worry of going over-the-top with your brush or bronzer. The fact that it’s slightly larger makes it great to blend the product into your skin, without displacing what is already there.

The eye shadow-blending brush

Another domed fluffy brush – only this is small enough to fit into the creases of your eyes. As the name would suggest, it helps blend or diffuse your eye shadow so that you have no harsh lines. However, it can also be used to place your highlighter on the tops of your cheekbones.
