Summer’s here, well, almost. City-based designer boutique Vedhika, run by young entrepreneur Maithri Anand, is all set to welcome the season with a new collection of fashionable and frisky weaves. The collection, ‘Venal Malare’, literally summer flowers, hopes to capture the essence of the season.

“It’s a collection that celebrates the sights, colours, sounds and the joy of summer. It’s inspired by the memories of summers past, of childhoods spent in idyllic villages in tune with nature; summers chasing butterflies, flying kites, listening to the Jataka tales…” explains Maithri.

The new collection is divided into three sections. For the hep crowd, who like making a style statement even when going casual, there are ready- to-wear garments under the label ‘Summer alchemist.’ This includes stylish kurtas, kurtis, tunics, palazzos and the likes, all in cotton.

Then, there’s a whole range of evening wear – saris, gowns, jackets and dress materials, in the latter, particularly, ‘fusion’ churidar sets with a layer of comfy cotton underneath embellished georgettes. Last but not the least is the store’s signature collection of ‘curated’ cotton saris.

You have pretty Ikkats from Orissa, Kalamkari prints, Mangalgiris, Kerala saris, Gadwals, Chettinad cottons and so on. Also part of this are some trendy Kotas, embellished with Lucknowi chikan work, supernets, appliqués, embroidery, cut work, and hand block prints, to name a few. Tissue Kotas with vegetable prints are also worth another look.

A bunch of summer-themed “timeless” motifs embellish the weaves. You can find pretty butterflies, soaring kites, birds, cows, flying elephants, dancing peacocks, laughing tigers and the likes inspired by the Jataka tales, kites and parachutes and flowers such as lavender, rose, and the thumba. “For the colour scheme we’ve mostly stuck to the Pantone colour palette for 2016. The cuts too are based on the latest trends. As such, we have smart collars, split hem dresses, straight cuts, anarkalis, maxis and asymmetrical hems,” explains Maithri.
