Heads up for braids

Braids

We aren’t talking about constricted schoolgirl braids here. “You could take two small sections of your hair on either side, braid each separately, bring them across to the centre and pin them together.

This is a lovely half-up half-down hair trend. The waterfall braid is a winner. If you’re looking to make a bold statement, go for thick braid buns. Today’s French braid could be worn only on one side while you leave the rest of your hair open. Braid hair bands suit wavy hair.

The undone fishtail is easily the prettiest braid trend of the season. You can even weave in a colourful ribbon through your braid,” suggests stylist Yashica Mittal.

Discreet Pop Colours

The trend sure sounds like an oxymoron but hair experts believe 2016 will see more of understated hair colours. “Sure, we love purple, burgundy, red, and perhaps even blue, but the idea is to tone down the ‘pop’ factor now. Your hair colour need not be loud to be dramatic. Candyfloss shades and washed-out subtle hues are a great way to wear your hair in the months ahead,” says Aradhika Shukla, proprietor of a premier beauty salon.

Faux Bangs

Popularly referred to as “one-night hair”, faux hairdos have been sported by celebs around the globe. “As surprising as this may sound, fake hair is pretty cool,” feels hairstylist Nisha Xavier. She adds: “If you’re apprehensive about committing to a real fringe, you could just fake one. One could do that by tying a high ponytail, bringing just a section of the topmost part of it forward to form faux bangs, and using bobby pins to set it in place. Then, use hairspray on the rest of your ponytail and tie it into a top knot, secured again with a few bobby pins. Using a hair straightener, you could iron your fringe and get the desired look and texture.”

Hair Charms

With sunnier days ahead, hairstylists say it’s about time you start stocking up on charms to adorn your tresses. While floral crowns and wreaths still have a fan following, there’s more in store this year. “Hair charms could range from shiny hair pins and gold thread weaved through the hairdo, or could even be an ornate hair band. Think sequins, pearls, and crystals. Delicate head-chains are perfect to pull off the Boho chic look,” says style blogger, Ritu Chhabria.

Wide Satin Bands

Embellished hair is the flavour of the season but you don’t quite have to go OTT with your choice of hair accessory. Broad satin ribbons and headbands, reminiscent of the 70’s are making a fashionable comeback. According to Anushka Singh, an aspiring model, “Apart from the fact that a ribbon can glam up your look, I love satin bands as they have a girly appeal. Interestingly, as seen on the runways recently, fabrics like crushed velvet, and leather, are also good options.”
