It sure isn’t a new trend among men. Nonetheless, the fad has been revolutionized thanks to pop culture. Once viewed as a sign of rebellion and then as an overt symbol of a particular sexual orientation, the trend of men wearing earrings is nothing like it was in the past.

Jewellery designer Ishita Sinha says: “As seen in films and sitcoms, earrings on men can make a powerful style statement. They can even be compared to tattoos. Wearing an earring implies making some sort of a declaration about one’s personality.”

Recently released Bollywood film ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani’ might not be faring well with the critics as well as with the masses but if there’s one thing about the movie that caught our attention, it’s got to be Ranbir Kapoor and Rana Dagubatti’s earrings!

While men who sported the rugged look used to be the ones that dared to wear earrings, the times have changed. According to Thrivikram Murthy, a stylist, “Earrings are for any man who knows what kind of stud/hoop suits his ear shape and lobe, the occasion he’s wearing it to/for, and for someone who is confident about his looks.”

If fashion forecasts are to be believed, men with just one earring will soon be a dying breed as one of the upcoming earring trends for men involves piercing both ears instead of just one as was previously popular.

In terms of the kind of ear studs that are in vogue, Manu G.P. who runs a piercing studio says: “Among young adults and older men, diamond studs still remain a popular choice, but since a larger stone is trendier than a smaller one, cubic zirconium studs look elegant.”

He adds: “The younger guys usually prefer studs in silver, stainless steel and titanium. For those who like hoops, the mantra hasn’t changed. The earring needs to be small and snug around the earlobe.”Deepak Singh, a collegian says: “For people like me who have a low threshold for pain, magnetic ear studs are the perfect option. They are also more affordable”Other styles of earrings for men that are gaining popularity include ball closure rings (hoops with a tiny bead wedged in the gap) and barbell ones (that men also use for eyebrow piercings). If you’re wondering where you can buy these earrings from, unless you are buying pure silver/diamond earrings, you don’t need to head to a full-fledged jewellery store. From supermarkets and street corners, they’re available everywhere. As with any other trend, flaunting an earring isn’t something everyone can pull off. More than the kind of earring you wear, it’s the attitude with which you carry it off that matters most!
