A pair of shorts on a hot summer's day is pretty much the ultimate statement in style, fearlessness and physical perfection. A lot of us girls watch enviously as other, braver babes float around in shorts as the mercury soars, but when it comes to donning a pair, we're all, oh, I don't know . Well, it's time to conquer your fears, girls!

Why shorts score

Exposing your toned shoulders and arms to the merciless Indian summer is a bad idea – remember that spaghettis were invented for temperate regions, where the summer sun is much milder. Legs tend not to get so much of the heat, which is why a pair of neat shorts score over that strappy sundress. Plus, you don't need heels or makeup, or even jewellery – all you need is those slim, toned legs and a dash of attitude.

Shorts are primarily designed for comfort and cuteness, but there are lots of ways to wear them. And in the hottest summer Bangalore has seen in years, it is time to be seen in shorts.

How to wear themPretty in pastels: Um, feminine shorts? Most of us think of shorts as the quintessential tomboy outfit. It takes a leap of imagination to think of shorts as a girly extra. But worn the right way, they can project a look of ethereal prettiness and wholesome freshness - a fun alternative for those who find skirts too formal and constricting.

The See collection by Chloé for Spring/Summer 2014 featured high-waisted shorts in lemon yellow and iridescent pale lavender, while high-waisted tailored shorts in palest pink made a showing at Schiaparelli. When it comes to shorts this season, high-waisted shorts in ethereal pastel hues are the way to go.

In black and white : White shorts studded with diamante crystals and a matching white top showed up in Versace's couture collection this Spring/Summer, while See by Chloé had shorts in pristine white. Score the trend by cropping a pair of white jeans into shorts - glittery bits optional – and pair it with a white tee embellished with silver sequins or diamante crystals for a street version of this haute ramp look.

If black is more your style, Ralph Lauren's Spring/Summer 2014 collection offered up itty-bitty tailored black shorts, while Moscino's spring collection had adorable black shorts with a golden chain looped at the waist.

Where to wear Shorts will fly at any place with liberal-minded people. Wear them to an art gallery, theatre workshop or on a road trip to Goa. Mind you don't step on the trail of broken hearts. Be a supermodel among mortals in the season's most sensational trend.
