Manish Gupta is one of the keenly watched young designers in the Indian fashion firmament. Famous for creating fuss-free silhouettes with rich crafts and complex techniques, the New Delhi-based designer comes to Chennai with “Carved Desires,” a line of feminine garments that showcases a dozen delicate hand skills. In a quick interview as a run-up to the launch, Gupta speaks about the new collection and the essence of a good cut. Excerpts:

DREAMS AND REALITY

It’s a line that has a dream-like quality. I deliberately called it “Carved Desires” because the work process is elaborate and detail-driven and reflects the way a masterpiece is carved! Intricate cutwork, jamawar patterns and tonal floral gauze embroidery are some of the highlights of this line.

GOWN IS GORGEOUS

Yes, I’ve done plenty of gowns this time. As always, I’ve offset the craft-centric approach with simple, clean silhouettes. These gowns are high on craft. The panelled styles are dressed up with cutwork, cord and appliqué. The look moves from light to heavy keeping price points in mind.

The light ones look effortless and can be teamed with a churidhar for an Indian look. The chiffon ones are breezy and should do well for lunch outings. Though casual, there is a touch of handwork on them. They are flattering, yet not completely Western in concept.

FEMININITY MY SIGNATURE

When it comes to cut, I keep my look feminine. As a designer, I’m always seeking a good cut. The add-on value comes from the crafts I use and colour is least of my worries. I’ll be happy doing ivory all the time — although I’m always under pressure to use bright hues.

THE FINISH LINE

I consider finish to be my big plus. I obsess over the finish of my garments. Even today, I personally examine every piece that leaves my factory. I try to keep things simple as far as my choices are concerned. It allows me time to get things right.

PERFECTION IS ALL

I recently had a dress shipped back to me after five years. Reason, the client wanted a similar one and that too in the same colour and another in red. It shows there are women who appreciate well-finished products and are willing to wear the same style after many seasons! That’s the magic of a perfect fit and a good finish. Style should make you feel good.
