Prema Florence's collection is a delightful mix of class and comfort

Prema Florence Isaac's Rangoli collection currently on show at Amethyst is a fusion of East and West. Simple, with understated elegance, and studiedly casual, it is sure to make heads turn, spelling class and scoring high on comfort.

The Jersey collection in western cuts and pleasing shades - lemon, aqua, pink, not to forget stunning blacks and whites, make for fluid dresses.

The dresses are embellished in interestingly - braided necklines, appliqué work and delicate embroidery or with belts made of the same fabric that can be tied the way one fancies. Some of the outfits with plunging necklines have straps that form an eye catching pattern.

For those who prefer the sporty look there are sleeveless tees with stylish racer backs.

The best thing about the Rangoli collection is that it gives you the freedom to mix and match and layer the garments. The jersey tops can be teamed up with jersey churidhars, long and short, and if one feels that the sleeves are too wide, one can cover them with an overtop or use them as a pinafore.

Her own borders

Prema's ingenuity comes through in the way she has fused the Tangail saree borders with other fabric (often designing her own borders) to create dressy overtops. Pretty crochet trims and appliqué work further embellish the outfits.

There is no dearth of accessories either - from wrist bands to neckpieces to scarves in a variety of shapes (ones that fall in a V shape at the nape are sure show stoppers). Bags are made of traditional Indian fabrics, dressed up with sequins and even flowers made of fabric - not surprising since Prema is of French Carribean descent.

Her western eye has carefully zeroed in on the strengths of Indian fabrics and the rich colours, and she has created outfits that blend Eastern and Western styles bearing her unmistakable stamp. And, Prema's USP? Ethical fashion - one that is environment-friendly and sustainable.

The price ranges from Rs. 450 to Rs. 7,500. The exhibition is on till September 27.
