Click and ride

Jugnoo autos, an app-based auto service in the city, ensures that the auto rides are no longer the same

COIMBATORE: Now, you can call an auto in the city with a tap on Jugnoo app from your Smartphone. A certified auto driver reaches your place and you can take a stress-free ride to your desired location. All this within a few minutes of booking. There are no arguments, no negotiations of auto fare with the drivers, and no fleecing. The app allows you to track your ride. Once you finish the ride, based on the ride summary you simply pay via Paytm.

Jugnoo, a Chandigarh-based start-up has tied up with over 100 autorickshaw drivers in the city to ensure that the auto rides are affordable and hassle-fare. All the credentials of the auto drivers are checked carefully before enrolling them on to the auto-app. The app-based auto service comes as a breather in a city where the autorickshaw drivers charge exorbitant fare for even short distances. The service works well for autorickshaw drivers as they easily make more rides and more money (it gets deposited in their account) instead of idling away. For customers, it is the hassle-free ride that clicks.

While Jugnoo base fare is just Rs.15, the fare per km is Rs. 3, and the rate for the ride is Rs.1 per minute. In Coimbatore, they clock 500 rides a day and they plan to achieve 2,000 rides a day in another couple of months. “We have plans to launch in Chennai, Madurai and Trichy starting from April 1. We are also working towards reaching out to villages in Tamil Nadu. Pilots have already begun and we are starting from villages around Coimbatore like Somayanur, Semmedu, Rasipalayam and Kurundampalayam,” says Samar Singla, CEO of Jugnoo. Jugnoo has a presence in 22 cities. In places like Jaipur, they clock 3500 rides a day while in Mysuru they have already hit 1000 rides a day. “Our industry growth is maximum in South Indian states, followed by Delhi NCR, Gujarat and Maharashtra. This growth can be mainly attributed to the increase in Smartphone and Internet penetration in these regions.” A pre-launch survey in Coimbatore put the city on top slot when it came to smart phone users. Some of the other findings pointed that many preferred public transport rather than the autos because of fleecing and arguments with the auto drivers. Jugnoo wanted to tap into these customers.

Commenting on the app-driven model, Samar Singla says it provides more convenience to users and also enables them to reach out to a much wider user base. “With the ever increasing rate of Smartphone penetration, majority of the people prefer to access information on the go now. Going forward, more companies will be adopting an App only model.” The service has garnered a positive feedback from both drivers and commuters in tier II cities, he says. “Driver efficiency is a bigger problem in tier II cities than in tier I cities. Hence, Jugnoo is solving a very fundamental problem in these cities.”

The CEO says Jugnoo is working very aggressively towards bringing lady drivers on board. “We have already enrolled a couple of lady drivers in Noida, Nagpur and Ahmedabad, and intend to add more. We are offering incentives to our drivers for bringing lady drivers on board with Jugnoo. We also encourage our female drivers by offering them referral/ride schemes that are competitive and encourage them to perform better and remain more engaged.”
