All that jazz

It’s all women, and they are all in for slaughter. Meet the merry murderers of Cook County Jail and watch as they sing about their anger, frustration, love and loss. The Hot Shoe Dance Company’s production of Chicago is ready to hit the stage and organiser Jeffery Vardon says it’s being presented the same way it’s done on Broadway. They’ve kept the period, stuck to the look, rehearsed the dance sequences for four months and received the performance licenses from New York. It’s show time!

Chicago is a play I always wanted to do because it has all the styles I like including blues, show biz dancing, jazz, pasodoble and tango,” explains Jeffery. He says it takes eight months to conceive a play and put it up on the Indian stage. For this particular production, they’ve made no concessions, spared no expense and put a lot of work into the look of the whole show. “ Chicago is all about show business. So the production is going to be all about the colour,” he says, adding that he isn’t just talking about the costumes. LED lights have been used to enhance the stage, including Roxie’s lipstick and Velma’s eye shadow. “It’s going to be glamorous,” promises Jeffery.

Actor Vishal, keen to bridge the gap between theatre and cinema, stepped in as the presenting partner and roped in Yuvan Shanker Raja to produce the music. Jeffery says that the music has been taken from the original production but “Yuvan has given it his own twist.”

Chicago will be staged at the Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall on October 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. Tickets are priced at Rs. 1,000, Rs. 750 and Rs. 300 and are available at O2 Health studio, Khader Nawaz Khan Road. For bookings call 97905 60748/ 767.
