When an intense, bearded musician befriends a calm, bald one, the resulting product is a soulful set of tunes and melodies, and an odd band named Indeed. With their first single ‘Remember’ out sometime ago, the band has moved into the stratosphere. Their video has been applauded for its aesthetic appeal and professional editing. The band has previously performed at venues in Bengaluru such as Take 5, Gilly’s and The Big Pitcher.

Sreejith Sreekumaran Nair and Danny M, have both been very fascinated with music since they were kids. As friends they used to jam for fun during the weekends, while they completed their graduation. “Wanting to be a part of the music was my desire,” says Sreejith. “Danny learned guitar much before me and seeing him play actually inspired me to pick up the guitar. Last year, when Danny finally agreed to come down to my hometown I knew we must do something together. It was now or never. Randomly jamming to some of our old tunes with our friends, their enthusiasm in our music got us to work on it and actually get it recorded. And thus we began.” Danny recalls that at the end of their jamming, they had a pretty unique genre to their name and had a sound that they could their own.

Chalking out a genre

Ask the boys what kind of genre their music falls into, and both of them express their difficulty in narrowing it down to one. “It’s hard to tell,” says Sreejith. “We call ourselves cross-genre. Music has layers of different feelings attached to different emotions. We want to reach out to everyone, not just one group of people.” Danny remembers their first song as an ADM (Acoustic Dance Music) genre, but their second song ‘Remember’ was something on the lines of ‘easy listening’ or ‘soul music’. “If I were to put a hashtag on our music as a whole, I’d put soul,” says Danny. “But Indeed as a group would be a lot of good music with soul.”

‘Remember’ – their first single

‘Remember’ started out when Danny came up with a pair of melodies one night. The duo listened to the track the next morning and instantly fell in love with it. “The song focuses on a lot of nostalgia and reminiscing college days,” says Sreejith. Danny remembers it as not being conscious composing. “I was recalling my childhood, which is something I do quite often and a lot of strong memories hit me. The video too focuses a lot on nostalgia.” The band draws their inspiration from raw human emotions. Their combined synergy works in a way that compliments each other. While Danny comes up with the instrumental part, Sreejith brings in the vocals. However, they switch roles after a while making the final product an amalgamation of two creative brains. Friends first, musicians second, Danny and Sreejith possess different vibes but bond over humour, food and music. While Sreejith works on his vocal style, Danny is a fingerstyle guitarist and is also into oriental music.

Acoustic music in the future

The duo’s love for acoustic music brings in Indeed’s unique sound. “There aren’t many acoustic duos on the Indie scene,” says Sreejth. “I feel like acoustic music is something which will appeal to a large audience of a varied age group. I do see a lot of potential for Indeed. It’s only a matter of us being heard.” With the kind of response Indeed garnered with their first single, the duo is now working on bringing out an EP, of about four to five songs.

Indeed’s ‘Remember’ has struck a chord with every listener. Director Anjali Menon even appreciated their music and efforts on her Facebook page, helping these two young musicians with some much deserved visibility.

If you’re the kind of person who loves dusting off those old shelves, taking out boxes of photographs from a forgotten past, ‘Remember’ is the right song as a background score.
