The Music Academy reverberated with the enchanting songs of Mohammed Rafi recently, courtesy a programme titled “Tumsa Nahi Dekha”, organised by Backstage.

The show, a tribute to Shammi Kapoor, was anchored by Ameen Sayani and Vaibhav Tatwawadi. What with Mohammed Rafi lending his voice to most of Shammi's songs, the show was as much a tribute to the actor as it was to the singer.

Songs from “An Evening in Paris (‘Aasmaan se aaya farishta', ‘Diwane ka naam poocho'), “Kashmir ki Kali” (‘Kisi na kisise kabhi na kabhi', ‘Deewana hua badal'), “Bluffmaster” (‘Ae dil ab kahin naja'), “Tumsa Nahi Dekha” (‘Yoo tho humne laakh'), “Jaanwar” (‘Tumse achha kaun hai'), “Junglee” (‘Yaahoo, ehsaan tera')… rendered by Dhaval Chandwadkar, Mohd. Rafi Habib, Sahil Gokhale and Savani Ravindra, transported the audience to the golden era of Shammi Kapoor. Barring occasional audio glitches, the show, part of the proceeds of which will go to Satya Surabhi Trust for the education of underprivileged children, was memorable.

A video presentation on a mega screen, accompanied the songs. The programme was aptly called “Tumsa Nahi Dekha”, as the film, released in 1957, proved to be a turning point in Shammi's life — a big hit after 18 of his films flopped at the box office.
