Treasure trove of flavours

The name sounded promising – Kebab Khazana. Envisioning varieties of succulent kebabs, we enter this small yet cosy restaurant. Going through the menu, which states that the restaurant specialises in Awadhi cuisine, we were disappointed to see that the restaurant serves mostly different kinds of chicken and vegetable kebabs. As we did not want spicy kebabs, our waiter suggested we try chicken reshmi kebab and chicken garlic tikka. The service was quick and both dishes came piping hot with bowls of mint chutney.

The chicken reshmi kebab had tender pieces of well-marinated chicken with thin strings of gooey cheese on top. Disappointment over. The pieces of kebabs melted in the mouth as did the chicken garlic tikka, which, however, had a strong flavour of raw garlic.

Excellent dal

We then ordered methi chicken, dal fry and plain roti. The methi chicken had the aromatic fragrance of the methi that makes ones mouth water. The not- too-spicy curry went well with the roti. Although the rotis looked burnt and crisp, they were surprisingly soft. The dal fry was a big hit at the table. Served in a miniature balti, which some restaurants use to serve puliserry and rasam, the dal was emptied in no time.

As we waited for the bill, the waiter hands us the restaurant's take-away menu. The menu was quite extensive. There was a choice of chicken, fish, and vegetarian starters, all kebabs. Although there was only a choice of either fish or prawn tikka in the fish starter, on the vegetarian side of the list there were paneer tikka, tandoori potato and multani mushroom to name a few. Biriyanis such as egg biriyani, chicken Hyderabadi biriyani and mutton biriyani and pulao such as Kashmiri pulao and green peas pulao are available as is the ubiquitous fried rice.

The restaurant has a long list of Indian breads, chicken-based side dishes and vegetable-based dishes on its menu too. The restaurant at Chakka Junction is open from 12 noon to 3.30 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. daily. Kebab Khazana is a sister concern of Khana Khazana at St. George Towers, opposite Holy Angels Convent, Vanchiyoor.
