Spicy, a take away counter on Kuravankonam road, lives up to its name for the food served here is meant for those who like it hot. The menu when compared to most take out joints is impressive. The dishes are mostly ethnic with a couple of ubiquitous Chinese ones added for those who cannot do without their daily dose of fried rice and chilly chicken.
I notice two interesting dishes on the menu and decide to order them – Kotthu parotta (Rs. 65) and Murtabak (Rs. 60). As accompaniment I order Kadai chicken (Rs. 65). You can choose from chicken, beef, egg or a mixture of all three for the Kotthu parottas and Murtabaks.
If you decide to order a Kotthu parotta, do stick around when they make it. The chef creates an interesting rhythm as he chops up the parottas. Be prepared for a wait especially if you are ordering Murtabak. Only curries are available for those on the run. Parrota, chappati, appam, fried rice, and noodles are prepared on the spot.
However, one need not twiddle their thumbs while waiting for their order. You can beat the heat with the variety of juices, shakes and canned fizzy drinks. I ask for a Mango pure (Rs. 25). This drink is pure mango juice sans any added water.
My packets of food ready, I head home. The aromas from the parcels whet my appetite. Food on the plate, I dig in.
The Kotthu parotta is mouth watering. Parottas have been finely chopped with a spice-laden chicken mixture. In fact, the dish I felt had more masala chicken than parotta.
The Murtabak (stuffed parata) had an interesting ‘Chinese chilly-chickenish' kind of filling. The edges that did not have the chicken stuffing were a tad leathery though the Kadai chicken (which tasted like regular chicken curry) helped soften it. Make sure you have a large jug of water by your side, especially if you are not used to a fiery fare.
It was altogether a spicy fare to remember.
