It is true that Indiranagar is choc-a-bloc with pubs and restaurants. But how many of them are affordable. Only, perhaps, a handful. Jive, a newly set-up pub and lounge bar, is definitely among the more inexpensive places to hang out. It hardly makes a difference that it isn’t located in a posh neighbourhood, the experience is the same as with any pub.

The décor is essentially retro. But you don’t feel as though you are in a high-end pub. You could well be simply dressed in jeans and a t-shirt, and be oblivious to the people around you. The pub is frequented by regulars, we are told.

The alcohol, cocktails and mocktails come at a reasonable price. We start our meal with a cocktail—the green apple martini, which is a mix of vodka, green apple syrup, lime and sugar syrup. It is an instant refresher.

The menu has quite a variety, for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians, from a wide variety of starters to the main course with multi-cuisine options. The hallmark of the food is that it is made of fresh ingredients.

The tawa mutton chops are spicy and succulent while the tawa paneer is a generous serving of finely-grilled and marinated paneer that are mild to taste. The bharwan tangdi is a signature dish that is delicious for the chicken mince stuffing. The tawa king fish, served next, consists of two pieces of seer fish marinated in chilli, coriander, chilli powder. You can imagine how spicy it is, but, then, that’s what makes it appealing.

The main course consists of curries, biryani and different kinds of rotis and parathas. We opt for mutton rogan josh with steamed rice. It really is comfort food, as it is as well-prepared as home-made rogan josh. We conclude our meal with desserts that include gajar ki halwa and hot, syrupy gulab jamun. A fitting end to a truly satisfying meal.

Jive is located at 68/1, Double Road.
