While buffets are convenient for speed and variety, they suffer as food tends to dry out for standing too long on the warming dishes. The Buffet Carnival has taken care of that with a nice mix of live counters and regularly replenishing the dishes rather than putting out huge servings.
The restaurant, which started last month, as the name suggests serves only buffets for lunch and dinner seven days a week. Proprietor Vishal Gupta said the idea behind the restaurant is “to make people who love food enjoy a carnival of a time.”
And a carnival it is with cheerful music and peppy interiors. There is a welcome drink—minty nimbu pani in shot glasses, which we knock back in accepted style. I am not a fan of soups as I feel they unnecessarily fill up the stomach. My companion tries the adraki kukkad shorba which gets full marks for its gingery flavour and smooth texture.
The starters — three vegetarian and three non-vegetarian feature the usual suspects of paneer and chilli potato on the vegetarian side while the non-veg options include the ever popular chicken lollipop and fish fry on the live counter. The American chop suey is also served live. There are parathas served at the live counter in addition to the kulchas and assorted rotis that are served at the table.
There are salads galore — 11 out of which two are non-veg and the main course has Indian and Chinese options. From noodles to pulavs and biryanis to daals, vegetables, meats, steamed rice and the mandatory curd rice they are present in glorious variety.
The dessert counter with its kheer and rabdi, gulab jamoon and rasagolla present a bewildering array. There are also six flavours of ice cream served. The whole meal didn’t take us more than 45 minutes—and we didn’t rush.
The restaurant has a launch offer where you get a buffet free for every buffet you order. The offer ends on August 31.
