IIFA 2016, held in Madrid, Spain, saw some serious fashionistas descend on the green carpet this year. The three huge trends spotted at this iconic Bollywood event were nude colours, off-shoulder gowns and androgyny.

If I have to pick one star who owned IIFA 2016 with her looks, it would have to be Deepika Padukone.

She proved to be a fashion chameleon by experimenting with her styles. On day one, she was spotted wearing a royal blue pant suit with a plunging neckline working the androgyny trend perfectly. On the green carpet, she was dressed to kill with a Sabyasachi evening gown with a cape. The cape is another big international trend this season.

Athiya Shetty, a young and upcoming star, carried off the androgyny trend with élan in a white Bibhu Mohapatra pant suit combo. The trick to get the androgyny trend right is to keep the hairstyle soft and wear minimal jewellery.

Nude-coloured evening gowns were all the rage. Priyanka Chopra looked ethereal in a nude chiffon Schiaparelli couture evening gown. It would be a crime not to mention Shilpa Shetty, who looked stunning in an ivory coloured cut-out column gown by Shantanu and Nikhil. Actor and producer, Divya Khosla Kumar added a beautiful traditional twist to the this trend by wearing a Vikram Phadnis lehenga and traditional Indian jewellery. A refreshing look in a sea of western wear flaunted by the other stars.

Another favourite among the stars was the off-shoulder shimmering gown. Sonakshi Sinha and Aditi Rao Hydari took to this look and looked like modern-day princesses. A practical way to experiment with this style is to wear off-shoulder tops with leggings. You could even be a bit more daring and wear an off-shoulder mid-calf length dress for a night out. Wear your hair in an up-do if you have a slender neck to look more elegant. Keep the jewellery simple to finish the look.

Neha Dupia and Bipasha Basu are usually stunners. But this time their sartorial choices were disappointing. Neha’s white retro-collared gown was a washout while Bipasha’s blue ruffled gown by Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla was too over the top.

Experiment with IIFA trends in your own way. Change is the only constant and it’s no different in the fashion world!
