Chakras are spinning vortexes of energy in the body that affect your emotions, thoughts, and health. Balance in the chakras means a healthy, fulfilled life.

The heart chakra or anahata is located in the centre of the chest and is represented by the colour green. This chakra mainly governs the rib cage, lungs, heart, circulation, skin, hands, arms and the upper back. Any imbalance or blockage will manifest as dysfunctional relationships, feeling isolated, skin conditions, asthma, circulatory problems, low or high blood pressure, heart palpitations, chest pains and, in extreme cases, heart attack. So, how do we change our thoughts to balance the chakras? There are very simple ways by which you can realign your chakras.

Meditation: Sit in a comfortable position with your legs crossed and close your eyes. Once you are completely relaxed, imagine a green light radiating from the centre of your chest and spreading outwards, completely engulfing you. Let the light travel from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. Repeat three times.

Yoga: Yoga helps open up your heart chakra and allows positive energy to flow in. Try asanas such as the sphinx pose, the camel pose ( Ustrasana ), the cat pose ( Marjaryasana ), the fish pose ( Matsyasana ) and the chest fly kundalini exercise. As you arch your chest up in these poses, positive energy will easily be able to flow in.

Crystal Therapy: The vibrations from crystals help heal our chakras. Start by lying down in a quiet place and keeping the crystal on the centre of your chest. Relax and let the gemstone take away all the negative vibrations and fill you with positive vibrations. After 10 minutes, remove the gemstone and place it in a bowl of water to cleanse the negative energy from it and activate its powers again.

Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy is also quite effective. Essential oils for a balanced heart chakra are marjoram, hyssop, angelica, lavender, neroli, chamomile, rose, jasmine, ylang ylang, rosemary, sandalwood and frankincense. Focus on positive thoughts and memories and let the oils take away all the negative energy.

Connect with nature: Take up activities like gardening or biking that allow you to be close to nature and greenery. Feel the green light radiate from within your chest and engulf you.

If your heart chakra is blocked or imbalanced, you need to be patient while it heals. The positive energy will bring better opportunities and make you love yourself more. Learning to love yourself is the first step to opening up better avenues.
