Age is just a number

Minoo Vania offers a travel check-list for the elderly.

When you are pushing 80, planning a holiday is done with a bit of trepidation. It is not the memories of the Titanic but the more recent aches and pains of age that are worrisome.

When my wife fractured her foot just a couple of months before our much-awaited cruise, the concerns were real. But now that we are back after a super holiday on the seas, I am convinced that like most other problems they are more imagined than real. With over 3000 fellow travellers from 60 nations, this conviction was cemented and we are already planning our next holiday. Many are daunted by unsubstantiated fears of “ what if …” May I, like a typical Fauji, offer a check list to plan your next holiday? It certainly helped us.

This is not an exhaustive or detailed check list but will serve you well.

But, if after all this, your cellphone charger plug does not fit the hotel room socket, don’t blame me. These may be small issues but they cause major headaches on a holiday and are best avoided.

And, yes, please carry a couple of empty one-litre bottles in your check-in bag. At many places, you have to buy water and it is pretty expensive.

Of course you can drink from the tap but to be on the safe side just fill up before you leave your hotel.

As I said we are back from a super holiday and are already planning the next one as a special 80th birthday gift. Go plan yours too, it’s never too late!

Travel smart

Select your destination and gather as much information as possible from the Internet, friends, travelogues etc.

Get your agent to book air tickets, hotel accommodation, cab pick-up/drop; excursion tickets etc. It may sound more expensive but is not and also saves you a lot of trouble.

Get travel Insurance.
Make sure you have a doctor’s prescription for any medicine carried. Carry a small firstaid pack.
Check the validity of your credit/debit cards.
Carry the right kind of clothes and footwear.
Carry only essential accessories like umbrellas, sunglasses, windcheater, caps, etc.
Ensure your money, passport and other documents are secure.
Take along a sling/tote bag to carry your cap, umbrella, or the odd purchases.
