Here's how you can keep your skin glowing and healthy even in the heat.

At the first sign of summer, most of us tend to relax our skin care regime. Summer brings its share of skin problems due to dry weather and hot harsh winds. Unfortunately, we cannot always stay inside our cool homes to prevent problems. So we must know how to prevent and tackle them. Diet also plays an important role in preventive care so eating right tops the list of “how to prevent skin problems in summer”. In some rare cases, people may even require medical treatment.

A dry skin is the most common problem in this season. But the problem varies depending on skin type; in some cases it may be mild and in others very severe dryness.

Seasonal problems

Dry skin is caused by very low humidity levels in the atmosphere that causes the skin to lose the moisture provided by the natural skin oils. This may be accompanied by itchiness. Other problems include cracked or flaky skin, chapped lips, tanning, darkening and cracking of skin on the elbows, knees and heels.

Acne may also increase due to the dry weather. Skin-related disorders like psoriasis, dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and eczema may also worsen.

Here's what you can do to have a good summer.

Don't forget to apply sunscreen every day.

Apply moisturiser or body oil daily. Do not forget rough spots like elbows, knees and feet. Moisturisers with alpha hydroxyl acid exfoliate the skin's outermost layer.

Exercising is good for your skin as it helps detoxify your body.

Use a natural foot scrub and pumice stone to slough away dead skin. However if you suffer from a skin disorder like psoriasis, avoid scrubbing.

Before going to bed, apply moisturiser or petroleum jelly on your feet..

Soaking up the sun can relieve you of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which leads to lethargy. So, make sure you get a good dose of Vitamin D. Increase intake of foods rich in Vitamin A, C and E.

Drink lots of water to remain hydrated.
