A smartly dressed young fairy, in a shiny white dress, was flying around on a cold winter morning. She stopped mid air when she saw a black pigeon coming towards her.

The fairy was excited as she had never seen a black pigeon. “I have only seen white pigeons and so, this is a new experience for me,” she thought.

When the pigeon came close to her, he said, “You are a fairy, if I am not mistaken.” When she nodded, the pigeon continued, “It will be great if you can make this white cloud shower some rain on me.”

The little fairy laughed aloud, “You must be crazy to want to get wet in such cold weather.”

“Yes, I am! But I need to show you something.”

Surprised, the fairy did as the pigeon requested. She said, “O fair white cloud, please shower some rain on this pigeon.”

The white cloud immediately started to rain on the pigeon. As the water started rolling over the body of the pigeon, the little angel was amazed. For, black liquid was dripping off the bird and white spots began to emerge.

“See, I am not a black pigeon!”

The cloud was also surprised and it stopped raining. With a heavy voice, it said, “You are a truly attractive pigeon, but who has turned you into such a terrible state?”

“I am a victim of human torture.” The pigeon was moved to tears.

“How?” asked the fairy.

The pigeon said to the cloud, “But you know everything, don’t you?”

The cloud said, “I am grateful to this fairy who asked me to rain, otherwise I would have almost forgotten how to rain!”

The fairy was sad, “But you love to rain, then why don’t you?”

A scary scene

“Come with me, I will show you something,” said the cloud.

The fairy had hardly descended when she started suffocating. She felt her eyes burning. Grey smoke came curling out of chimneys and her white dress was becoming black.

She turned around to tell the cloud, but it was nowhere to be seen.

“Where is the cloud?” the fairy asked the pigeon.

“Oh! he got so scared with the extreme heat. He ran off. But see for yourself. You cannot find trees in this concrete jungle. There are only high rise buildings, houses and factories. How will that poor fellow find water vapour for condensation and rain?” said the pigeon.

The poor fairy was shocked at what she saw.

Suddenly, a thought struck her and she said, “But we can make an effort to make people aware about the serious dangers of pollution. We can make them understand how they are degrading the environment.”

“Yes, you are right. My survival also depends on human life and green cover. And, of course it would be great to see greenery once again. Come on let’s share our thoughts with the cloud.”

And they flew off.

Piyush closed his notebook amid a thunderous clap from his classmates and teacher. His teacher said, “You have indeed written a good story. You surely deserve the first prize for your creativity and concern for the environment.”
