In earthquake is the result of a sudden release of energy in the earth’s centre that sends out energy in the form of vibrations to the surface of the earth. Recently, a powerful earthquake happened in Nepal and destroyed many lives and property. Richter scale is used to measure the strength of earthquakes. A higher value indicates higher intensity. Magnitude 7 or above can cause severe damage.
In Japan, building structures are stable, and many buildings are made of light and flexible material. When earthquakes occur, the building only moves but does not fall. Thus, we need to have well designed buildings as well as warning systems to reduce damage during an earthquake. Better understanding of the behaviour of some animals and birds can also help in earthquake research. Students can understand earthquakes by doing small projects in their school and can provide fresh ideas to survive when an earthquake strikes.
