Every time Mohammed Irfaan and Mohammed Farhan, Std XII students of Jyoti Nivas Senior Secondary School, Aluva, log in to the school website (www.jyothinivas.org) they feel proud.

For, it was they who designed and launched it with hardly any prior experience in web designing during the school annual day last year.

Surprise offer

“We were writing blogs and our principal Sr. Linda happened to see it. Impressed by it she asked us if we could come up with a website for the school and we readily agreed,” said Irfaan about their entry into web designing.

However, the task they volunteered for proved tough with their zero experience in software handling. Not surprisingly, the entire process progressed at a snail's pace in the first two months as they toyed with the software, which was entirely Greek to them.

However, with each passing day they got comfortable with the Adobe Dream Weaver, Adobe Flash Professional, and Photoshop, the software they relied up on for building the site.

The only experience the duo had was a six-month 3D animation course they did during their high school vacation. Even that course wasn't completed.

“But once we got the hang of it, it was really exciting and fun. We worked on the content from our homes and got it approved from the principal before getting it uploaded from the school,” Irfaan said.

The school authorities were encouraging, providing us with all data complete with photo and video clippings promptly.

Irfaan and Farhan have taken it up on themselves to update the website every time an event or something of relevance is held in the school. “We will continue to do it till we pass out. From then on others will have to take charge,” Irfaan said.

New option

Their achievement is set to be featured in the school magazine, which is to be brought out soon. More than anything, the venture has filled them with oodles of confidence. In fact, they are even thinking of developing websites commercially.

It has also provided them with a career option. “Defence is my first priority and with this experience Information Technology has become my next choice,” says Irfaan.
