The summer holidays have begun. Students throng the Anna Science Centre Planetarium in Tiruchi. The Planetarium has been attracting large number of students not only from Tiruchi and neighbouring districts, but also from faraway districts like Virudhunagar and Cuddalore.
Besides providing interesting information on science subjects in general, and the latest achievements in the field of science and technology in particular, the Planetarium also provides entertainment like 3D shows.
Galleries
The spacious campus houses the planetarium, mini 3D theatre, apart from House of Sciences which includes an activity gallery, an environment gallery and a science park. The planetarium shows and the 3D shows are frequently updated so as to keep the visiting student community abreast with the latest developments.
Apart from these facilities, it is the various programmes organised by the Centre which regularly attracts students from different destinations. During the summer holidays, the Science Centre makes it a point to conduct special programmes, which always evoke an overwhelming response. In connection with “World Earth Day”, the Science Centre conducted a painting competition for the students to create awareness among them on the importance of increasing forest cover.
The Science Centre has planned to conduct a summer camp next month. Special seminars, workshops, and competitions aimed at kindling a scientific temper in young minds will be conducted with the help of experts from different fields, according to T.M. Alagiri Swamy Raju, Project Director (in-charge) of the Science Centre.
Research too
Training will also be imparted to the students on research aspects, steps for solving problems and preparing science models. A group of students and teachers of Panchayat Union Primary School, Pattamangalam, Narikkudi union in Virudhunagar district, who visited the Science Centre recently found their short visit a very useful one.
“This, a model Science Centre, and the facilities available here have been useful to the students. The galleries teach more than classrooms and a regular visit here will immensely benefit the student community,” observed B. Balachandran, headmaster of the school.
