The Ma Foi Foundation honoured 10 children from across the State with Disha Young Achiever Award . The winners of the Disha Awards were awarded a trophy, a cash prize of Rs.10,000, and a citation each by actor Surya. Mr. H.R. Srinivasan, vice chairman & Vision Holder of Take Solutions, was the chief guest. He gave the “Disha Award for Academic Excellence” to those who excelled in the Std X and XII examinations.

Of the 284 nominations received, 50 children were short-listed for the final round. The winners were short-listed on the basis of their performances, economic background and their drive to achieve.

Vels Vidyashram, Pallavaram, bagged the International School Award (ISA) award recently for the second time in succession. The school principal Mrs. Jailaxmi Rammoorthy and the ISA coordinator Mrs. Rama Ramdas received the award.

L eo Matriculation Higher Secondary School celebrated Vanamahotsav called “Green Day” hosted by the Eco Club of Leo recently. Mr. M.B.Nirmal, president of Exnora, Mr. Soundarajan, district forest officer, Teynampet, Mr. Srinivasa Rao, president Rotary Club, Chennai, Gemini. Dr. D.V. Krishnamoorthy and Mr. Lakshman the Rotarians attended it. The terrace garden, “The Green Cap”, was inaugurated. Scholastic India invites schools all across the country on November 25 to celebrate the pleasures of reading. One Nation Reading Together is an annual event, during which children in schools across the country will spend 30 minutes (preferably at 12 noon) reading for fun, and doing other activities that celebrate reading as a pleasurable and enriching experience. The event is also about making books accessible to children who normally do not. For every school that participates in the event, Scholastic India will donate 100 books to the library of a needy school.

An eye/dental screening for the pre-primary students of Smt.Gangadevi Bajranglal Chokhani Vivekananda Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Minjur, was conducted through Rotary club of Madras by the doctors of Uma Eye Clinic and Meenakshi Ammal Dental College. More than 370 students benefited from this camp. Mylapore Academy, R.A. Puram, on its 57th Anniversary honoured meritorious institutions and individuals for the year 2009-10.

A lpha Matriculation Higher Secondary School was awarded the Silver Rolling Trophy instituted by Dr. S. Ramamurthy, neuro surgeon, for the Best Matriculation School in city that sent the maximum number of students for the Std X Matriculation examination in 2010 and securing centum percentage of passes and also the highest number of marks . The school bagged this Trophy for the fifth time.

Bambaram Toy Library (www.bambaram.in), an online educational toy library, has partnered with Vidyarambam (www.vidyarambam.org), an NGO providing education to kids affected by Tsunami, to provide used Bambaram toys for play. As part of their Children's Day celebrations, Bambaram invites parents/kids to donate “working” toys/books/CDs and to avail one-month free trial subscription. Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School was declared winner of the Chennai region in the Texas Instruments Science & Technology Quiz, 2011. The Hindu Senior Secondary School and Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School were adjudged second and third respectively.

Globus celebrated Children's Day by taking 80 underprivileged kids under the care of World Vision India, on a fun filled day out. Their day started off with a special screening of a recently released movie followed by lunch and lot of fun activities organised by Blacksheep INC. The kids enjoyed face painting, dancing with clowns, a magic show, musical chair and so on. Globus gifted them hampers with sweets, t-shirts and drawing materials.

Vijay Shanthi Builders and PaperMan conducted a Paper Collection Drive amongst five schools and four gated-communities of Vijay Shanthi. The money collected through the drive has been donated to the Nanhi Kali Foundation that supports the education of girl children. The schools that participated were: Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Anna Nagar; Lady Andal School, Chetpet; Church Park School, Anna Salai; MCTM School; and Sankalp, the Open School and Learning Center.

Raffles Millennium International conducted the inter-school postcard design contest. The theme was “Street art in India”. More than 700 students from Std X and above from 30 schools across Tamil Nadu took part in this contest. The best 68 designs were short listed for the finals. The top 10 designers got a chance to win special gift hampers, certificates and prizes. The final winner B.P. Bala Dhurgesh from S.B.O.A, Anna Nagar, walked away with an Apple iPod.
