Nerves of steel make city boys champs

The Hindu Young World Quiz ' 2011, as always, saw enthusiastic participation from students across five districts making it to the war of minds.

“Concentration, positivity and keeping our nerves were the keys to our win,” said Preetham Upadhya and K N Bharat Rao, students of Std IX, Sharada Vidyalaya, Mangalore. Beating the team of St Mary's School, Udupi comprising Sandeep Rao Kordcal and Kaushik S Kalmady in an exciting tie breaker, the duo emerged winners of the eighth edition in Mangalore of The Hindu Young World Quiz '11, an initiative of The Hindu-NIE held at Loyola Hall, St Aloysius Pre-university College.

Be prepared

Preetham, a third-time participant of the quiz and also fourth place holder in last edition's all-India finals, said that constant preparation is a must for excelling in quiz events with the Young World quiz being the backbone of his quizzing career. He said that they both prepared in a way that they could complement each other. M. R. Vasudeva, Director, Mangalore airport, gave away the winning trophy. Priyankar Kumar and Elton John Furtado, students of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar emerged second runners-up. Canara High School and St Theresa's School in the city and Sri Venkataramana School, Kundapur, were the other finalists.

Quiz master V. V. Ramanan kept children engaged with interesting questions. A first-time participant Tubah, student of Std IX, Madhava Kripa School, Manipal, said, “The preliminary round was super exciting and one needs to be really smart as a participant here as the questions are tricky”. Questions such as who was the US president during the First World War and on which river is Victoria Falls in Africa stimulated minds in the audience too. The grand finale will be held at Thiruvananthapuram on November 14.
