For a creature of about 1.5-inch long, I am much feared and maligned rather unfairly, if you ask me. My black body with red hourglass marking on my abdomen never fails to send a shiver of horror in those who recognise me as the most venomous spider in all of North America. True, my venom can kill a child or a small animal but I never attack except in self-defence. My table manners may not be pleasing. I pierce the body of my victim with my fangs; inject digestive juices into it to liquefy its insides before I suck it up.
It is man who has given me my name black widow spider for I often make a meal of my mate who is smaller than I. It’s rather judgemental of him considering the way he conducts himself on this planet. From the letters you received, you can tell that many agree with me in this matter.
