Day out: Escaping the fire

“I greeted the fireman in person,” said Prapthi, a nursery student of Little Elly Concept Pre-School in city, excitedly, after visiting a fire station in Pandeshwar. The visit was part of their curriculum, of getting up close with community helpers. In all, 30 students, all from nursery, interacted with fire fighters and also were made aware of ways to escape in the event of a fire.

Red tales

For Regan, another student, it was the loud siren of the fire engine that was fascinating initially. He was equally happy to learn that it was sounded when the fire engine was on its way to the destination.

He was told the siren was to make the public aware of a fire and that the other vehicles were required to make way for the vehicle. Prapthi said that she liked the sight of the huge red-coloured fire engine and the firemen in their uniforms with yellow hats and black boots. Advaith, another student, also looked excited to hear the bell of the fire engine clanging.

Anjana Kamath, school co-ordinator, said that after the visit, the children seemed to remember the ways of putting out the fire and safety precautions. Most importantly, they recalled that it was the fire station one needs to call in a fire emergency.
