Amid splashes of colour, palpable excitement and very creative minds, the 17th“ The Hindu Young World On-the-Spot Painting Competition” was held at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan here on Sunday. About 400 students from 40 schools participated in the competition.

The competition comprised two categories -- Junior (Classes IV to VII) and Senior (Classes VIII to X). Each category had ten prizes -- first, second, third and seven consolation prizes.

The children were allowed to use the medium of their choice for their painting. While some used crayons, others preferred oil paints, water colours and even colour pencils.

For the Junior category, the four subjects were: “Picnic with family”, “Enjoying ice-cream with friends”, “Visit to a museum or a botanical garden” and “Having fun at the playground”.

The first, second and third prizes in this category carried a cash award of Rs.3,000, Rs.2,000 and Rs.1,000 respectively along with certificates.

In the Senior category, the topics were: “Enjoying rain with friends”, “Bicycle ride with friends”, “Watching a tennis/ cricket match with friends” and “Science Exhibition”. The first, second and third prizes in the senior category were Rs.5,000, Rs. 3,000 and Rs.2,000 respectively along with certificates. Consolation prize winners in both categories were awarded Rs.500 in cash. All children were given participation certificates.

The children came up with very innovative drawings and paintings, with some focussing on the subject they had chosen and others paying more attention to the technique.

“I like drawing with oil pastels as they are easy and smooth to work with,” said a contestant in the junior category from Bluebells School, East of Kailash.

The judge at the competition was eminent artist and art teacher at Navodaya Jawahar Vidyalaya P. K. Roy. “While assessing the paintings, the focus is on the child's originality of thought, and how well the child sticks to the given topic. Also, the parameters for judging juniors and seniors are different,” he said.

Mr. Roy has organised more than 11 solo art shows at the national level and has also been part of group shows.

Parents of the participants were equally enthusiastic about their children being a part of the prestigious competition.

In the Senior category, the first prize was awarded to Dishaddra Poddar, a Class IX student of Ryan International School, Mayur Vihar; the second prize was bagged by Anamika Adhikari, a Class X student of Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 2 (AFS), Hindon, and the third prize winner was Mohit, a Class X student of Evergreen Public School, Vasundhara Enclave.

In the Junior category, the first prize went to Kushal Chakrabarty, a Class VII student of Khaitan Public School, Sector-40, Noida; the second prize was bagged by Divya Prasad of Class VII, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Masjid Moth, Sadiq Nagar; and the third prize winner was Somoshree Mahapatra, a Class VII, student of St. Anthony's Senior Secondary School, Hauz Khas.
